Question of the Week: What is a Unity Candle?

llavelle | Articles, Past "Questions of the Week" | April 25, 2009

The lighting of the unity candle is a tradition incorporated into the wedding ceremony. Usually the mothers of the
bride and groom light two tapered candles which flank a larger pillar candle. Later in the ceremony, the bride and groom each take their family’s respective candle and together light the pillar candle, symbolizing the joining of their two families.
